Patch Management: automating updates across your IT estate
Patch management is one of the top responsibilities of an IT provider. A missed security update is a vulnerable machine. Patching everything blindly means risking an incompatibility. An RMM lets you industrialize updates while keeping control.
Why automate patch management?
- Compliance: ISO 27001, HDS, GDPR demand up-to-date systems
- Security: 80% of successful attacks exploit known vulnerabilities
- Productivity: automation frees up time for high-value work
- Traceability: track who was patched, when, by whom
Approval policies
A good RMM lets you define approval policies by severity:
- Critical security updates: automatic approval, deploy within 24h
- Important updates: manual approval, deploy on the next window
- Optional updates: approval case by case, no automatic deployment
- Driver updates: never automatic, test first
Deployment windows
Never deploy a patch during business hours. Define windows like:
- Workstations: Wednesday night 2am-4am (natural restart next morning)
- Non-critical servers: Saturday 10pm-2am
- Critical servers: planned once per month, after validation on staging
Rollback
A bad patch can break production. Your RMM must let you uninstall an update per machine or at scale, and track which patches went out when.
Reports and audit
Every month, send a patching compliance report per client:
- Patch coverage rate across the fleet
- Pending critical updates
- Failed updates with reasons
- Fleet-wide average time to patch
