IT Monitoring: in-house or outsource to an MSP?
Managing an IT estate in 2026 requires skills, tools and availability. Should you build an in-house team or hand it over to an MSP? The answer depends on your size, criticality and growth stage.
In-house option
Pros
- Deep institutional knowledge of the business
- Fast reactivity, no "external provider" chasing
- Can take on side projects (business apps, internal dev)
- Long-term costs potentially lower above a certain size
Cons
- Fixed salary + benefits, even on low-activity months
- Hard to find and keep senior sysadmins
- Vacation / sick leave / resignation = critical gaps
- Below ~50 people, the role is often part-time only
MSP option
Pros
- Fixed monthly fee, often cheaper under 50 people
- 24/7 availability (or 5x8 per the contract)
- Access to a wide team with varied expertise
- No HR management (vacations, raises, training)
- Up-to-date tools (RMM, PSA, EDR)
Cons
- Dependent on vendor availability
- Risk of lower-tier support unless specified in the contract
- Less deep business knowledge
- Switching costs if the relationship goes bad
Which to pick based on your size?
Under 20 people
MSP recommended. An in-house sysadmin would be seriously underused.
20-80 people
Hybrid. A junior IT internal person for daily user support, backed by an MSP for monitoring, patch management and incidents.
80-200 people
In-house with escalation. A full in-house team of 2-3 people, backed by an MSP for third-level support and specialized projects.
200+ people
Full in-house, structured by expertise domain (network, systems, security, workstations), with specialized vendors for niche needs.
The right tooling in both cases
Whether in-house or outsourced, the fleet must be monitored by an RMM. For an MSP: a multi-tenant tool with ticketing and reports (like WezOps). For an in-house team: a single-tenant tool with per-site segmentation.
